“Then your spearmaidens are going down as well,” announced Shellis. “We’ll not leave you unguarded.”

“That’s hardly necessary,” I replied. “I’m going to take command of my ship and my men.”

“Nevertheless, it is our job to keep you in safety. We can’t accomplish that from the deck of the Vulture.”

“Fine,” I said, “but one of you stays onboard the Vulture with Shawna and Amber.”

Captain Trime agreed. “Having a spearmaiden in the vicinity seems to be an effective reminder for the crew to mind their manners. Unless of course, you trust Roland or Piyano to stand guard in their absence.”

“I may have use for Roland and Piyano aboard the Skull Crusher,” I told the captain.

“Very well,” replied Trime.

“Toaris,” I said, addressing the tattooed Chosen spearmaiden. “Stay aboard the Vulture.”

“Very well, Lord Greattrix,” she replied. “I will safeguard your interests aboard the Vulture.”

All of a sudden, I felt a warm body crush against me and Amber kissed me long and passionately. “Come back safe, Strommand!”

“There’s nothing to fear.” I noted Shawna looking on as I knotted a rope to a post, and then I lost sight of the strawberry blonde as I descended over the rail.

I was followed by the dark-haired, dark-eyed Shellis and the lean and long Iveso, who lowered themselves on their own ropes. When I let my weight down upon the snow, I sank up to my thighs and Shellis sank up to hers as well. Iveso mitigated this problem by lying on the snow, spreading her body weight across a larger area instead of concentrating it all on two feet. By doing this, she was able to avoid sinking more than seven or eight inches into the loose snow and ice.

My heart leaped into my throat when I saw how close I was to the edge of the cavern mouth, for when I looked over my shoulder I found myself staring right down the mountainside, which plunged steeply for thousands of feet. If the snow gave way, our bodies would never be found. Indeed, when I attempted to climb out of the hole I found myself in, I felt the pack shifting and a few feet away from me snow and ice began to break off in large chunks, which snow-balled down the mountain slopes.
